About Melanie Menachem-Riggs

Melanie is currently a Garden Designer, a Garden Consultant and a Lecturer. Her major focus is on residential sites using perennials, annuals, herbs, vines and shrubs to enhance and expand the interest and blooming time in the garden. Her concepts for the domestic landscape are based on enhancing the existing physical conditions of the site and creating the vision of the client for a place for family refuge and pleasure.

Melanie is always experimenting with new plant combinations. She is currently transforming the back of an unsightly garage into a faux painted brick wall with trellises, window boxes and vines. Her design philosophy is to blend the house and garden, making the outdoors comfortable for the client.

Melanie is a hands-on dirt gardener. On her half acre, she grows a kitchen garden featuring paths and trellises while testing new and unusual varieties of vegetables and herbs. Other projects include trial gardens full of long-blooming perennials, bulbs, annuals, vines, shrubs and grasses.

Melanie graduated from the University of Vermont with a degree in Botany and Horticulture with her studies focusing on plant taxonomy and anatomy, plant ecology, mycology, biogeography and economic plants. Post Graduate studies in tropical botany as well as landscape design at the New York Botanical Garden.

She is also an Adjunct Instructor at the New York Botanical Garden.
Melanie is available for lectures and workshops to garden clubs, garden symposia and school groups. She has enjoyed past positions as: Horticulturist, Greenhouse Director, Horticulture Exhibitions and Collections at the Wildcliff Museum, New Rochelle, NY as well as Adjunct Instructor and Instructor at many Universities and Colleges and prominent associations such as the New York Horticultural Society.
